Murder Inc. Exclusive: Were Angela Presti and Giovanni Salamone victims of the New York Zodiac Heriberto Seda?
On March 8, 1990 Mario Orozco was shot by the New York Zodiac Heriberto Seda in Brooklyn. 12 days later on March 21 at 1 am, Angela Presti was shot in the head through the passenger side window as she sat in the car with her boyfriend on a lovers’ lane in Bayside, Queens. Her shooter was never caught and the NYPD never linked her shooting to the NY Zodiac crimes of Heriberto Seda.
Eight days after the shooting of Angela Presti, Heriberto Seda shot Jermaine Montenesdro in Brooklyn. On May 31, 1990 Joseph Proce was shot to death by Heriberto Seda in Queens. A week later, the NY Post and 60 Minutes received letters from the NY Zodiac. On June 19, Larry Parham was shot in Central Park by Seda. He left a note at the scene with astrological symbols.
On January 6, 1991 Giovanni Salamone and his fiancee stopped their car to look at a house with a for sale sign on 193rd Street in Queens. A man approached the passenger side at 12:45 am and shot and killed Giovanni Salamone. The killer was never caught and the NYPD has never linked Salamone’s murder to the NY Zodiac. Salamone’s killer used a 9 mm automatic handgun. Ballistics determined it was the same gun used to shoot Angela Presti in 1990. Heriberto Seda also used a 9 mm handgun. Despite the similarities and timing, the shooting of Angela Presti and the murder of Giovanni Salamone appear to never have even been mentioned in connection with the NY Zodiac crimes.
On August 10, 1992 Patricia Fonte was shot and stabbed to death in Highland Park, Queens by the NY Zodiac. On June 4, 1993 James Weber was shot by Seda near Highland Park, Queens. On July 20, 1993 John Diacone was shot and killed by the NY Zodiac at nearly the same spot where James Weber had been shot. On October 2, 1993 Diane Ballard was shot by Seda in Highland Park.
In March 1994 Heriberto Seda was arrested for weapons possession in Brooklyn. On June 11, 1994 Seda shot a man in Highland Park but there appears to be no record of the incident. On August 4, 1994 the NY Zodiac wrote a letter to the NY Post.
On June 18, 1996 Heriberto Seda shot his 17 year old half-sister Gladys Reyes in their Brooklyn apartment during an argument. Reyes escaped and called the police and Seda engaged in a 3 hour stand off and shoot out with the police. He eventually surrendered and was arrested. Police failed to make any connection between Seda and the NY Zodiac until Seda signed his handwritten statement with a symbol from the NY Zodiac letters. Seda’s fingerprints were matched to the NY Zodiac letters and his DNA was found under a stamp from one of the letters. Heriberto Seda was subsequently convicted of the New York Zodiac crimes and sent to prison.
The New York Zodiac not only killed in the area around Brooklyn and Queens near where he lived, but also traveled to Central Park to kill. Seda not only shot victims, but also murdered a woman by stabbing her over 100 times. There are year long gaps between the crimes police were able to link to Seda. It’s highly probable that Heriberto Seda committed more murders that police have not linked together. Were Angela Presti and Giovanni Salamone unknown victims of the NY Zodiac Heriberto Seda? Why did the New York Police Department fail to investigate a connection or link the crimes to Heriberto Seda?

Police Commissioner Lee P. Brown urged New Yorkers yesterday not to park in isolated areas of the city after the police linked a bullet that killed a young man in Bayside, Queens, on Sunday to a similar shooting in a nearby “lovers’ lane” in March.
Chief Joseph R. Borelli, chief of detectives, said that all indications so far are that the same person committed both shootings, but he added that there was no way the police could yet know that for certain.
“All we know is that the same weapon was used,” he said. “We don’t know if the same person was involved.”
Chief Borrelli said investigators were checking records for any similar incidentsthat may have taken place since March.
He said that there have been other shootings of couples parked in deserted areas, but that none resulted in a death, and could not say how many have been turned up. Besides the bullet, there is no other clue to the gunman’s identity.
He dismissed comparisons between the two shootings and the Son of Sam case, in which 13 people were shot and 6 were killed, mostly couples parked on deserted lovers’ lanes. “It’s too early in the investigation to know whether it’s anything like that,” said Chief Borrelli, who led the investigation that led to the conviction of David Berkowitz in the case.
The man killed on Sunday, Giovanni Salamone, 24 years old, of 30-16 42d Street in Astoria, Queens, was parked in a four-door Nissan with his 19-year-old girlfriend on an isolated section of 193d Street adjacent to Peck Park in Bayside, Queens. Bullet Misses Companion
At 12:45 A.M., a man approached the car by foot along the sidewalk and fired from close range into the car’s front window on the passenger side, the police said. The bullet missed the young woman, hitting Mr. Salamone under the arm and lodging in his stomach, Commissioner Brown said. He died at 5:15 A.M. at North Shore University Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The copper-jacketed bullet found at the scene was fired from the same 9-millimeter automatic handgun used in a shooting onMarch 21 in Queens, when a bullet shattered the jaw of a 29-year-old woman sitting in a four-door Honda with a 28-year-old man, Commissioner Brown said.
The car was parked on a quiet stretch of 214th Street near Crocheron Park in Bayside, about three miles from where Mr. Salamone was shot.
Chief Borrelli said the attacker approached the car in much the same way and the shooting also took place about 12:45 A.M. In that case, the gunman man fired through the rear passenger-side window of the car.
Commissioner Brown said there seemed to be no connection between the two couples.
