Torso Killer

In 2021, Murder Inc. and Dr. Peter Vronsky linked serial killer Richard Cottingham to a series of unsolved murders on Long Island. Many years ago, Murder Inc. began to suspect Cottingham was active on Long Island after learning of a series of torso murders that took place over about two weeks in 1964. The first victim was Jocelyn Carr, whose dismembered remains were found one block from where Cottingham would kill Deedeh Goodarzi and Jane Doe in 1979. She was a secretary for an advertising firm on Madison Avenue. Cottingham had started a job on Madison Avenue in 1964. The second victim was Martha Owens, who disappeared from the Bronx, where Cottingham was born and where his grandparents lived. Her torso was found at the bath house on Jones Beach, the exact same spot where Cottingham left Maria Nieves in 1974. The third victim was Carmen Rodriguez, who worked as a sex worker and was found dismembered in a Bronx lot. Three different “victim types”, a Madison Avenue secretary, an elderly widow, and a sex worker all murdered and dismembered over the course of two weeks and dumped in three different locations, Manhattan, The Bronx and Long Island. Murder Inc. is unaware of any other unsolved torso murders of female women in NYC during this time.

Murder Inc. contends it’s 100% completely obvious Richard Cottingham committed this series of torso murders in 1964. Unfortunately, Dr. Vronsky doesn’t share the same enthusiasm and has shown little interest in the murders of Martha Owens or Carmen Rodriguez. Despite this, the fact that Martha Owens was found on Jones Beach in Long Island led Murder Inc. to look deeper for unsolved murders on Long Island that Cottingham could be responsible for in the 1960s and 1970s. This led to the reexamination of the murder of Cynthia Constantine from Oakdale, NY in 1969. Upon closer examination, Murder Inc. noticed that the murder occurred only three days after Cottingham had killed Denise Falasca in New Jersey.

After alerting Dr. Vronsky to the case of Cynthia Constantine and the fact Murder Inc. suspected she was killed by Richard Cottingham, Dr. Vronsky informed Murder Inc. that Cottingham had an uncle who lived on Long Island. This information led Murder Inc. on a deep dive, and Murder Inc. discovered a number of unsolved murders and a series of home invasion rapes from 1966 known as the Massapequa Masked Rapist that occurred around Cottingham’s uncle’s house. Working in tandem, Murder Inc. & Dr. Vronsky discovered many murders that Richard Cottingham was responsible for on Long Island in the 1960s and 1970s including but by no means limited to, the murders of Diane Cusick, Mary Beth Heinz, Laverne Moy, Maria Nieves (discovered and linked to Cottingham by Dr. Vronsky) and the murders of Sheila Hyman and Dorothy Anderson (discovered and linked to Cottingham by Murder Inc.). Cottingham confessed to all these murders thanks to the hard work of Deedeh Goodarzi’s daughter Jennifer Weiss, and the Nassau County Police Department pretended they’d solved them themselves. The police chose not to announce Cottingham confessed to the murder of Dorothy Anderson.

Murder Inc. discovered the murders of Marilyn Simons, Estelle Hague, Florence Lemler and Kathy Woods (among many others) and shared them with Dr. Vronsky, letting Dr. Vronsky know Murder Inc. strongly, strongly suspects they were the work of Richard Cottingham. Unfortunately, Dr. Vronsky doesn’t share the same enthusiasm in these cases either, mainly because Marilyn Simons, Estelle Hague and Florence Lemler were older than Cottingham’s known victims.

The first victim officially proven to have been murdered by Cottingham on Long Island was Diane Cusick, found killed in her car in a Valley Stream parking lot in 1968. After Cottingham told Dr. Vronsky he frequented the drive-in movie theater at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream. Dr. Vronsky let Murder Inc. know, leading both Dr. Vronsky and Murder Inc. to excitedly research and find newspaper articles of Diane Cusick’s murder at the Green Acres Mall independently of each other on the same day. This led Dr. Vronsky to beg the police to look for a DNA match to Cottingham in their evidence. Eventually they did and pretended they’d solved the murder themselves.

Richard Cottingham is responsible for many more unsolved murders but due to linkage blindness, dereliction and just plain stupidity he hasn’t been linked to them yet.

At times silent, at other times laughing or shouting obscenities, the defendant detailed his actions of last June 15, the day of the murder, until Supreme Court Justice David T. Gibbons asked: “Did you kill Patricia Ann Sullivan?”

The defendant slumped in his chair and stared into space. He remained mute for two and a “half minutes. There was silence as the spectators leaned forward in their seats.

During the entire interrogation, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sullivan of Wilmington, Mass., parents of the victim, sat in a rear row with hands clasped, listening intently.

Mr. De Nicola said he pushed his way into Miss Sullivan’s room at the college, in Greenvale, L. I., and locked the door. He said they talked, then took off their clothes and had intercourse. (An autopsy found no evidence of intercourse.)

“What did you do then?” the judge asked.

“I put my knife away.”

“A fishing knife, a hunting knife?”

“Hunting.”

“Did you use the knife?” “Just used it once.”

“What did you do?”

“Slit.”

“Slit what?”

“Slit her throat.”

Stabbed ‘Every Place’

The defendant said he got another, smaller knife and stabbed her “every place.” He said he did not know how many times he stabbed her—”I just kept on until my arm got tired.” He also said he punched her and tied her up but did not remember the sequence.

“She called me a swine,” he said.

“What did you think then?” the judge asked.

“I didn’t know what it meant,” he said, laughing.

“Did you feel like killing her?” the judge asked.

“Yeah.” “why?”,

“I like to kill.”

“Why?”

“I get satisfaction out of killing.”

Because of his frequent reluctance to answer questions put to him by Justice Gibbons and because of numerous recesses to enable his lawyer, James Van Norman, to speak with him privately, Mr. De Nicola had to shuffle awkwardly between the courtroom and an anteroom, the sounds of the chains on his leg and of his handcuffs disturbing the silence of the courtroom.

After the killing, he said, he took some coins from a table and left, covered with blood, to look for a place to wash.” He said that when he first saw the coins he planned to take them because he had been gambling and “I always went home a loser.”

Miss Sullivan’s body was found in her room on June 18 by a friend. She had been stabbed 21 times and had been bound and beaten on the face with a blunt instrument. Mr. De Nicola was arrested June 27. The police said he previously I had been in a mental hospital.

Last Tuesday, the defendant, pleaded not guilty because of “a lack of sufficient mental capacify at the time of the alleged acts.” The guilty plea today was in satisfaction of other indictments outstanding against him, including the attempted murder of a 26‐year‐old nurse from a New Hyde Park hospital and the attempted rape of a 15‐year‐old Old Bethpage girl.

Justice Gibbons at first. scheduled sentencing for Feb. 25, but Mr. De Nicola asked that it be changed to Feb. 26, a ‘Tuesday. When the justice, who made the change, asked why, the defendant said: “I don’t want to miss the Monday movie.”

September 2 1973 Phyllis Thomson Murder East Brunswick, NJ *Frederick Krug Convicted*

NEW BRUNSWICK, Sept. 25 — A.Middlesex County Court jury today returned two guilty verdicts against Frederick Krug, a 27‐year‐old East Brunswick man, on charges of kidnapping and Murdering Phyllis Thomson, 28, on Sept. 2, 1973.

Mrs. Thomson, a Lakewood resident, was abducted from the Cloud Nine cocktail lounge there shortly after midnight, was beaten and was thrown into a branch of the South River at Madison. nearby. An autopsy attribued her death to drowning. The victim, a thirdgrade teacher in the Manalaran Township public school, aspired to sing with a band.

The body was found three days later. More than two months afterward her shoulder bag was found not far from the defendant’s home by a trapper. Most of the woman’s clothing, some of it burned, was found to’ be in the bag, and a fingerprint on one article was traced to the defendant.

The trial opened before County Court Judge Richard S. Cohen last Sept. 9. The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for 13 hours before reaching the verdict shortly after 4 P.M. today.

Assistant County Prosecutor Joseph Benedict argued that Mr. Krug had followed the woman from the bar and attacked her in the parking lot as she was leaving for home after singing with the band at the bar. Mr. Benedict said the defendant assaulted the woman and dumped her in the river, then tried to burn the clothing he had torn from her.

Morton L. Anekstein, of the Public Defender’s staff, said the state’s case was built upon circumstantial evidence and that witnesses of dubious veracity had been put on the stand to bolster the state’s charges.

The defendant showed no emotion when the verdict was read, but friends of the dead woman broke into tears. Judge Cohen set Oct. 28 for sentencing. Mr. Krug could receive two life sentences on the charges.

HAUPPAUGE, L. I., Sept. 14 —A 15‐year‐old boy was ar rested today and charged in connection with the murder of Jennifer Sturek, 12, in nearby Holbrook on Tuesday.

The boy, whose identity was withheld because he is un der 16, was arraigned here on a charge of juvenile delinquen cy in Family Court, Juvenile Division, Judge Everett E. Schraeder directed that he un dergo a psychiatric examina tion and ordered him held in the juvenile shelter here.

The boy was also charged with juvenile delinquency in the stabbing of an 18‐year‐old girl on Saturday in the same wooded area where Miss Sturek’s body was found on Wednesday.

According to Police Commissioner Eugene R. Kelley, the murder took place in the va cant lot off Portion Road where the body was found on Wednes day. Miss Sturek had left her home at 125 Avenue A short ly after coming home from school to purchase candy at a nearby store.

Arrested During Class

Commissioner Kelley said “mosaic” of clues led to the arrest of the boy this morn ing at 10 A.M. as he attended special classes run by the Board of Cooperative Educational Services near Islip MacArthur Airport in Bohemia.

The boy met with his pa renti, who retained a lawyer, Barry Warren. At the arraign ment this afternoon, according to Mr. Warren, the boy de nied the petition, the technical term for a plea of not guilty in Juvenile Court.

The boy was described by Commigsioner Kelley as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds and three months short of his 16th birthday. The Com missioner refused to comment on any possible motive. The cause of death has been de scribed as a fractured skull by Dr. Sidney Weinberg, Suffolk County Medical Examiner, who also said examination showed she had not been raped.

Suspect ‘Near‐Neighbor’

The Commissioner described the suspect as a “near‐neigh bor” who did not know Miss Sturek but did know one of her brothers. He declined to say whether there were any wit nesses, and he also declined to say whether the 18‐year‐old girl, who was superficially wounded last Saturday, had identified the suspect.

The Commissinner said it was his understanding that, under state juvenile laws, the suspect, if convicted, would either face detention until the age of 21 or could be held for psychiatric care.

However, the two county at torneys handling the case to day, Harry Flood and Bernard Wechsler, declined to explain the state law, saying it was “inappropriate.”

Mr. Warren said he expected that his client would be “free in the near future.”
