Murder, Inc. Exclusive: Was the Long Island Serial Killer murdering in Virginia?
Alicia Showalter Reynolds disappeared on March 2, 1996 while driving from Baltimore, MD to Charlottesville, VA. Her abandoned automobile was found parked along the side of Route 29 in Culpeper, VA. A white man in a dark truck was seen appearing to assist Reynolds with her car. Her body was found about 30 yards off Va. 751 near a logging area in rural Lignum, VA on May 7, 1996. It’s suspected her killer was the white man with the dark truck who was also reportedly flagging down other women and telling them there was something wrong with their car. The man was described as “tall” and in some accounts 5’10 – 6′ tall. This killer is known as the Route 29 Stalker.
On June 1, 1996 Lollie Winans & Julie Williams were found murdered at their campsite in Shenandoah National Park. The victims were bound with duct tape and their throats were slit. Police and Federal Prosecutors tried to frame a Deadhead computer programmer but his DNA didn’t match.
On July 14, 1996 74 year old church organist Thelma Scroggins was shot to death inside her home in Lignum, VA near where Alicia Showalter Reynolds body was discovered. Her purse and pickup truck were missing. Police framed three kids for the murder.
On July 28, 1996 Alisha Johnson, 19, disappeared while walking to the store to buy hair gel in Alexandria, VA. About a week and a half later on August 6, 1996, a man in Marshall, VA found a human leg on his property. He then discovered another limb nearby. Police searched the woods and a small pond in the area. The remains were later identified as the severed legs of Alisha Johnson. The rest of her body parts appear to have never been recovered.
On September 18, 1996 Anne Carolyn McDaniel, 20, disappeared from a group home for people with disabilities in Orange, VA. McDaniel had told fellow residents she was going on a date. A blue Honda was seen driving up and down the street at the President Madison Inn group home where she lived. Her burned body was found by hunters in rural Batna next to Lignum, five miles from where Alicia Showalter Reynolds’ remains were found. McDaniel’s body was found covered by brush that was lit on fire about 70 feet from the road and 50 yards from a hunting cabin in the woods.
On March 1, 1999 two hikers walking on a footbridge in Richmond, VA discovered the severed head of a man. The man’s headless and handless torso was found in the St. James River about a mile away. He was identified as Henry Edward Northington, a 6’4, 39 year old gay Navy vet who lived nearby in a homeless camp. The footbridge where Northington’s severed head was found leads to a popular cruising spot.
On June 15, 1999 Kimberly Dawn Alexander disappeared from a Wendy’s fast food restaurant where she worked in Winchester, VA. Her car was found abandoned approximately 9 miles away in a parking lot. Her body was found in a remote wooded area of Jefferson County, West Virginia.
On November 22, 2000 Brenda Gee-Knight was last seen after her sister dropped her off near the Satellite restaurant in Richmond, VA. This was three days after Long Island Serial Killer victim Valerie Mack’s torso was discovered in Manorville, NY. On June 29, 2001 skeletal remains were discovered along the Mattaponi River by a canoeist in rural King and Queen County north of Richmond. Years later the remains were determined to belong to Brenda Gee-Knight. The victim is believed to have been involved with sex work at the time of her disappearance. Her murder remains unsolved by police.
On October 3, 2002 Carrie Ann Williams disappeared after leaving her shift at Hooters. Her body was discovered next to a dumpster in Richmond, VA. She’d been shot in the head and wrapped in plastic. Her body was bruised and bore indications she was bound and tortured before her murder. Her boyfriend was charged with her murder and acquitted.
On November 27, 2003 the dismembered torso of a woman was discovered by a deer hunter in the woods of Winchester, VA. The torso is reported to have been there for at least several days. The woman is believed to have been of Southeast Asian descent and likely aged 25 to 50. She has never been identified and her missing body parts never found.
December 18, 2005 Sheryl Warner was murdered in her home in Culpeper, VA. She was on the phone when a man knocked on her door and said he was having car trouble and asked to use her phone. Sheryl Warner was later found in the basement bound, shot in the head, and hanging from the ceiling by an electrical cord. Her home was also set on fire. Sheryl Warner’s house on Route 29 is across the street from where Alicia Showalter Reynolds’ car was found in 1996.
On May 14, 2007 partial human remains of a woman were discovered along the water at Lieutenant Run behind a Ramada Inn in Petersburg, VA. The woman’s skull was found in 2012 approximately two miles away but she remains unidentified.
On November 16, 2007, the partial skeletal remains of a man and a woman were discovered in a yard on Tranquility Lane in Sutherland, VA. The woman was identified as Shirleetha Ann Daniel but the man apparently remains unidentified.
On September 13, 2010 Samantha Clarke disappeared from Orange, VA. She lived across the field behind the group home where Anne McDaniel lived and was last seen in 1996. Samantha Clarke disappeared 11 days after Long Island Serial Killer victim Amber Costello. Police suspect she was murdered by Randy Taylor, who was convicted of murdering Alexis Murphy and, according to police, contacted Samantha Clarke before she disappeared.
On April 8, 2011 Robert Hourihan disappeared from Palmyra, Virginia. The 33 year old vanished leaving a young daughter and a wife of 13 years who believes he was murdered. Hourihan has a heart condition that requires daily medication. He left his medication and never refilled his prescription. His car was found abandoned at a Target in La Plata, Maryland over 100 miles away. Robert Hourihan didn’t know anyone who lived in Maryland. He’s never been seen again.
Dashad “Sage” Smith disappeared on November 20, 2012 walking to the Amtrak station in Charlottesville, VA. Smith had a date with a man named Erik McFadden who claimed Smith never showed up and also later disappeared himself.
On July 7, 2014, 49 year old Janet Renee Field disappeared from her home in Scottsville, VA. Her house was seven miles south of Rex Heuermann’s mother’s home. Her car was found abandoned at a park and ride in Zion Crossroad, VA, seven miles north of Rex Heuermann’s mother’s home. Field’s purse and keys were located inside her car. Police suspect foul play in her disappearance.
On June 17, 2017 Emma Compton Layne disappeared in Cody, VA. Two hunters found her remains in the woods on November 22, 2017. Her cause of death was traumatic neck injury.
Rex Heuermann’s mother lived in Palmyra, VA from approximately 1994-2019. In an April 2018 deposition, Heuermann described traveling “at least half a dozen times” to Virginia in the past year. How frequently did Rex Heuermann travel to Virginia in the 1990s and 2000s? Law enforcement alleges Rex Heuermann killed while his family was away, but what about while Heuermann was away from his family? Rex Heuermann acknowledges traveling to Virginia with and without his wife, but claims he can’t remember if his wife was with him on the trip around March 2018. What happened on that trip?
What do Rex Heuermann’s cellphone records indicate for September 2010 when Samantha Clarke disappeared? Was he in Virginia at the time of her disappearance? What about April 8, 2011 when Robert Hourihan disappeared or July 7, 2014 when Janet Field vanished near Palmyra?

On April 17, 2022 Maggie Stickler was last seen around the motels at Chamberlayne Avenue and Brookland Park Boulevard in Richmond, VA. Two hunters discovered her skeletal remains on October 15, 2022 over 150 miles away in a wooded area of Elm City, North Carolina.
