La Gloria Way Prowler

MURDER INC EXCLUSIVE:

Rancho Cordova Prowler Circa August 29 1979

A 13 yr old Rancho Cordova girl was alone in her home on La Gloria Way one morning at 7:45 am around August 29 1979 when she received two strange phone calls asking for her mother. 15 minutes later she heard someone tampering with the sliding glass door screens in her backyard. She telephoned her mother who then quickly called the sheriff’s office and a unit was dispatched to La Gloria Way. But by the time deputies arrived they were too late and the prowler was gone. The girl told deputies that in addition to the two phone calls asking for her mother that morning, her home had been getting “suspicious” calls for the last two days.
The report of the incident appeared in the September 12 1979 issue of the Grapevine, the local Rancho Cordova newspaper. Two weeks prior would put the date around Wednesday August 29. On Monday August 27 Joe DeAngelo was officially fired from Auburn PD and on Friday August 31 a 14 yr old Auburn girl was kidnapped from her home by a rapist. Was this “close call” with Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies on La Gloria Way an interrupted attack that led to the August 31 Auburn kidnapping?

La Gloria Way is the same small street where on February 2 1978 at approximately 9:10 pm the East Area Rapist chased Brian and Katie Maggiore into a back yard and gunned them down. There was a large amount of EAR activity on and around La Gloria way before the murder.

A young female on La Verla Court had been receiving phone calls where the caller would say nothing every night for a week at 8 pm prior to the murder. On the night of the murder there were no calls.
On the 2700 block of La Loma Drive a couple who moved in in the fall of 1977 experienced a lot of prowler activity at night and a burglary a month before the murder in the winter of 1977 where her undergarments were stolen. Around Christmas the gates and doors were frequently left open and they thought someone was entering their home but couldn’t find anything missing.
On the 2700 block of Capitales Drive a young female had been experiencing prowler activity and for two weeks prior to the murder she’d been receiving many phone calls where the caller would say nothing and then hang up.
On the 2700 block of Toro Court a 25 yr old woman had significant prowler activity at her home for a months which continued until the murder. She found shoe prints outside her bedroom window where the prowler had drawn on the glass with his own excrement. She made police reports but her gate was constantly left open. She tried to secure the gate but the prowler just vandalized it so he could still enter her yard freely.
On the 2600 block of Sobrante Way a married couple in their early 20s had their home burglarized a month before the murder but nothing was taken. They also had seen a prowler in their back yard recently.
On the 2600 of Sobrante Way a male and his female roommates in their 20s experienced a prowler during the summer of 1977. They received numerous hang up phone calls until the murder.
On the 2600 block of Capitales Drive a married couple in their early 30s started getting phone calls a week before the murder where the caller would say nothing.
On the 10000 block of El Chorlito drive a female in her 30s experienced a night time burglary where nothing was taken. She wasn’t home at the time.
On the 2500 block of Capitales Drive a female in her 20s experienced an attempted burglary on the night of the murder. The burglar tried to enter through a sliding glass door but his entry was thwarted by a secondary security device that the woman had installed. She also reported prowler activity around her home.
On the 10100 block of La Gloria Way at the house directly across the street from where EAR first encountered the Maggiores, a female in her late 30s and other females in the house received numerous phone calls where the caller would say nothing and hang up during the week prior to murder. The final call they received was at 8 pm on the night of the murder.

Witness:
I heard two shots from inside the house and they were real loud so I wasn’t sure what they were so I came out and I heard the third shot about halfway down the driveway, and a scream, and glass breaking. I heard about two more so I stood out here and then I can hear a little bit of running and then somebody hopping over the fence just right down the street. I could hear him falling in the bushes and it took him a few seconds to get out of the bushes but I could tell he was really scrambling and he came running right down the sidewalk. He came right up on the lawn next to the tree and right as he came to the tree he looked up and he saw me standing right here. He was pretty surprised and he turned around as quick as he could he just turned around and just headed straight down there towards the fire hydrant around the corner.

You were put under hypnosis yesterday. What were you able to give the sheriff’s office?

Witness:
Before I went in, I’m an art student and I drew out a picture of him standing next to the tree because I saw him and I drew a picture of him running down, a front and back view. It was pretty sketchy but that’s what I thought I knew right then. I went under hypnosis and while I was under hypnosis they gave me the pad and I put in I probably put in maybe ten more details.
